Innovative Architecture, Thoughtful Design, and Comprehensive Planning
Project Highlights
POINT EDEN WAY, HAYWARD
The proposed project aims to balance development and preservation efforts on a site located at the gateway of the City of Hayward, CA, previously owned by the Oliver Salt Company. The project would involve the demolition and removal of existing structures on the eastern component of the site, associated with the former Oliver Brothers Salt Works operations. Following this, construction of a new industrial building would commence, which would provide approximately 114,059 square feet of warehouse space for manufacturing and distribution purposes, as well as a 2,785-square-foot office area, which would serve as the UHAUL East Bay Headquarters.

The San Francisco Bay Trail currently runs along the eastern edge of the site. The proposed project includes a land swap with the East Bay Regional Park District, which would relocate the Bay Trail to the northern property line and western property line, with the aim of re-aligning it to benefit from the direct view of the San Francisco Bay and Baylands, including the former salt ponds. This would involve transferring ownership of the affected land to the project applicant and granting an easement to the East Bay Regional Park District for the trail to cross the property.
The proposed project also includes preserving approximately 32 acres of the western component of the site, which currently features salt evaporation ponds from the former salt production operation on the site. These parcels are classified as baylands and would remain in place, preserved in perpetuity. This preservation effort aims to retain the natural habitat and historical significance of the site as well as ensuring that the salt ponds are permanently preserved as open space.
